Every day, I give my students a journal topic to write about. Yesterday, I let a student in my 7th period come up with the topic question. He wrote “What do you live for?” I thought that was a very good question coming from a teenager and I decided that I should ponder that question as well. What do I live for?
For those who really know me, I have a feeling that they would say I live to be challenged. I thrive for a challenge. If you tell me I can’t do something, I will make it my mission to prove you wrong.
I never take the easy road. If there were two roads before me, the one to the left is smooth and direct while the one to the right is filled with bumps, curves and hidden driveways, I would take the road on the right. I always do things the hard way.
I like to explore and try new things. Maybe that is why I have adopted a nomad lifestyle. I can’t stay in one place for too long and do the same thing over and over again. I will get bored and my life will be miserable. The longest I have ever lived in one place, aside from my childhood home, was two years. I spent two years at my college apartment, two years at the North Hollywood apartment, and two years at my Tujunga apartment. Of course right now I am setting a record for myself with my current living situation. One month and I am already moving–this is the shortest living duration I have ever had before.
Why do I keep doing things the hard way or set myself up for a challenge? I don’t know. I think that everything happens for a reason and the Universe wants me to learn specific lessons. Every challenge in my life comes with a major learning curve. And even though I am literally a teacher, I enjoy constantly being a student in the classroom of life.
